Inside each assembly.
Explore serviceable parts—from the gyro unit to the telescope cradle. Turn them, separate their construction and follow the evidence back to the manual.
Vertical sight gyro
The vertical-axis rotor mechanism carried in the sight head. Its orientation supplies the telescope’s stabilizing reference.
PART · PAGE 99Sight gyro and telescope cardan
The common casting supporting the vertical gyro and telescope cradle in separate openings.
PART · PAGE 25Directional gyro unit
The electrically driven rotor, its bearings and motor fittings, enclosed by a ribbed case. The whole case can tilt inside the cardan while the rotor spins within it.
PART · PAGE 25Directional gyro cardan
The cast support frame, upper and lower gudgeons, ring gear and four slip rings surrounding the directional gyro unit.
PART · PAGE 25Precession and counter-balance bails
The case-mounted precession and counter-balance bails, together with the actuator that passes through the lower cardan gudgeon.
PART · PAGE 26Torque motor and magnetic clutches
Two opposed drives and their magnetic clutches provide corrective rotation to the stabilizer cardan.
PART · PAGE 22Bombsight clutch
A slipping coupling between the directional reference and the sight, operated by a collar, lever and spring linkage.
PART · PAGE 22Autopilot clutch
The separate slipping coupling associated with the autopilot and Pilot Direction Indicator linkage.
PART · PAGE 23P.D.I. brush and drift clutch
The resistance unit, stabilized brush, sight-stem bushing and drift-clutch arrangement shown together in the manual cutaway.
PART · PAGE 82Course knob assembly
The paired course controls and their shafts, gears and spring-loaded fittings at the sight end.
PART · PAGE 84Altitude knob assembly
The knob, graduated setting mechanism and breaker-point adjustment associated with the rate motor’s governed drive.
PART · PAGE 86Rate and displacement mechanism
Separate rate and displacement controls arranged around the disc-and-roller transmission.
PART · PAGE 86Computer differential shaft and brackets
The coaxial side gears, opposed transverse pinions and carrier, with a two-axis support bridge and separate short shaft and spur gear.
PART · PAGE 87Rate-end motor half
The parallel-wound motor, centrifugal governor, breaker arm and transmission of the motor half.
PART · PAGE 87Motor governor and breaker linkage
The crossed governor arms, sliding collar and connecting rod that move the telescope motor’s breaker arm.
PART · PAGE 100Telescope cradle assembly
The frame that supports the telescope, its mirror drive, take-up drum and connecting fittings within the sight cardan.
PART · PAGE 100Cradle mirror and sector drive
The pivoted mirror, open gear sector, integral shaft pinion and supporting brackets beneath the telescope.
PART · PAGE 93Telescope cable and sheaves
The installed cable path for the M-4-and-up arrangement, with five sheaves, guided passages and secured eyelets.
PART · PAGE 94Cross-trail mechanism
The eccentric disc, dovetail slide and connecting linkage coupling sight-stem rotation to transverse telescope movement.
PART · PAGE 184Precession leveling knobs
The fore-and-aft and lateral leveling controls, with their quick-setting and constant-torque knob pairs, springs and friction contacts.
PART · PAGE 77Sight upper housing
The upper casting and its attached inspection window, hollow eyecup, caging control and data-book holder.
PART · PAGE 77Sight lower housing
The lower casting, glazed telescope window and supporting stem beneath the gyro and telescope cardan.
PART · PAGE 142Sight end-cover assembly
The curved end cover, central bearing support and internal ribs closing the gyro end.
